the u.s. knew that japan was going to strike via wiretaps, but didn't know where.. personally i think the knowledge that hawaii is closer to japan than the continental u.s. would have been enough to guess the location, but that's just me. surely it was for a combination of reasons, but no matter what you believe, realize pearl harbor was strictly a military base hit for strategic reasons, whereas we hit civilian areas aiming to destroy national morale

You're getting your conspiracy theory confused. The U.S. didn't let Pearl Harbor happen in order to justify a nuclear bomb; in fact, the A-bomb had not yet been developed at the time of the attacks. Some historians will say, however, that the government did know about the intentions of Japan in advance, and let it happen as an excuse to enter the war (as most Americans were against the war, so Congress would not give their permission). The A-bomb was used to end the war more quickly, though.

Well, hopefully not that considering it's not true. The war was basically over, as Japan was almost completely out of supplies; most significantly, they were nearly out of fuel. The war was, however, dragging on, and the US knew that if it took any longer, Russia would join in the war, and thus be apart of the end-of-war negotiations. Truman did justify the bomb, though, by saying that the war could have cost a million more American lives, so he was saving those.
