FYI, you did right in staying at Cafe du Monde...I'm a born and raised New Orleanian...and no self-respecting citizen of that city would ever go to Cafe Beignet. Its a total tourist trap, and the cafe au lait is nothing compared to Cafe du Monde. If you want something different, try Morning Call, out in Metarie...its local and original.
Also, for po-boys, Johnny's is great, but next time youre down there try Domilise's. Its tough to find, hiding on an uptown street, but thats New Orleans for ya!

I miss NOLA. I lived there for 10 years. My favorite breakfast was Mothers, my favorite po boy was from Danny and Clyde's, and my favorite muffaletta was my own, but failing that Central was the undisputed best. The po' boys at House of Blues aren't too shabby either :) and if you mosey down Magazine you're guaranteed to get good food no matter where you eat.

Jacquie: We went to Parkway on our way to the airport. Fabulous sandwiches (possibly better than Johnny's? More testing is required!!) and seriously they nicest guys in NOLA.

The beignets are fine at Cafe B, but I like the scene at CdM. And we always go early enough that there's no line.

And another place we went to, twice: Coop's. Yes, it's a tourist trap -- but it's a tourist trap with really great fried chicken and red beans & rice. Dear lord, now my mouth is really watering.

My husband and I went to N.O. a few months ago for the first time and absolutely fell in love with it. This post makes me miss it more :)

I agree with Akio about Cafe Beignet across from CDM being less crowded and superior in the beignet department. We had both in a two day period and compared on our blog :)

I'm sad we didn't try Johnny's now! We tried the po boy at Parasol's and weren't that impressed. I've heard Parkway Tavern is excellent. We're definitely going back so I will have to try Johnny's and Parkway then!

When I was in NOLA recently, I found that there's a little place called Cafe Beignet across the street from Cafe du Monde that has less of a line and, actually, superior beignets.

Grr. Now I want some.

I also went to a bar called Pravda which has a wonderful selection of absinthe! Mmm, absinthe.

Johnny's is the best. Only found that place on our third visit to N.O. Their crawfish po-boy is amazing.

I sometimes make beignets when we have overnight guests. I make the dough the night before and pop it in the fridge. Fry them up in the morning.

Ooh I'm getting hungry!
