As soon as I’m done with this, I feel like I should be booking my next trip from rainy Portland to the sunny Mission. Actually I’ll be down soon to see sis-in-law, so your post is most timely…and hunger inducing. Salted caramel ice cream?? Um, yes please!!

Thirty: We hardly ever eat beef that we don’t cook at home because of the ethical issues involved with how nearly all commercial cattle are raised in the US. And frankly, I think there are definitely better cities — Chicago, NYC — to eat steak than SF; we’ve been really underwhelmed by the steakhouses here, and you pay dearly for even a so-so steak.

When we ate at Alfred’s recently, I told Cam that “it’s probably a good thing this place is terrible, given my distaste for feedlot beef.” Lesson learned: We cook Prather Ranch steaks at home and they beat the pants off anything we’ve ever had in a restaurant. Enjoy your visit!

I’m off to SFO on Saturday for a week of eating and enjoying the Californian sunshine (and wind and cold, I hear!). I’ve been trawling through your wonderfully informative blog for restaurant suggestions – I now have a list as long as my arm. the one things I couldn’t find though was your recommendation for a steakhouse – anything you would suggest in particular or should we keep our steak adventures for Keanes in NYC?
