Yeah, no complaining about eating local for you. It could be worse--you could be living in Seattle!

Four months of root vegetables sound good to you?

Hi Anita
Congratulations on your win - you are going to get a reputation there, young lady - all that drinking! Hopefully I will win your menu for hope prize so you can show me how its done. I have been pondering for a while on doing something similar to your dark days challenge in January. Except it doesn't seem so dark to me - December is always so full of excess, i am looking forward to a leaner, simpler january. I am hoping to just limit myself to salt, pepper and spices as my non-local things. Can't wait to try it.
My head is FULL of ideas. SInce most of my meals are local anyway, I am hoping I will not have too much trouble. It's the sugar (if I fancy baking), and oats (favourite breakfast) I am most worried about. At least I have full belly flour if I want me some bread. Have fun in Napa,

MA-B: True, but then I don't have your phat kid-raising chops. We all have our special talents to share.

Biggles: Yeah, totally a malt-soda kind of a meal. And -- I mention it just cause I know you'll appreciate this -- we made the biscuit crust with half butter and half lard... a cow-pig marriage that turned out oh-so-right.

Oh man, chicken pot pies are one of my all-time favorite things. You get crust & gravy!

Biggles

ps - I'll bet it really goes well with a cold schlitz.

Also, I should add that your rendition looks better than when I make it, because I lack mad plating skillz.

Laura: Hm, maybe fennel instead? Although, in your place, I'd be inclined to say that 95% local is pretty darned close... celery is about as essential as salt and pepper, IMHO.

Jennifer: The biscuit crust is, if I do say so, an inspired twist. Much easier for weeknight prep than even store-bought puff pastry, which was my old quickie method.

Matthew: D'oh! I stand corrected. But it -was- a masterpiece, regardless of my fast-and-loose fact checking. We'll definitely be making it again, and not just because we have another 1-3/4 pounds of wheatberries to use up!

Good news--as much as I've always wanted to be responsible for an unpublished masterpiece, the short ribs recipe has been published, on Culinate:

<a href="http://www.culinate.com/recipes/collections/5686/Beer-Braised+Short+Ribs+with+Wheat+Berries" rel="nofollow">link</a>

As Anita and Cameron pointed out to me, I probably call for too much liquid. Start with less stock than I'm asking for, and add more only if necessary.

Gosh, that all sounds wonderful, particularly the biscuit crust for the pot pie. I just ate lunch but I'm hungry all over again. :)

Wow - way to recover! I'm going to have to try your chicken pot pie recipe, but without the celery as there's no local source, ever.
