UPDATE: Local eating in Vegas is getting better!!

I just got an email newsletter from Valley Cheese & Wine saying they're now carrying eggs from Quail Hollow Farm in the Moapa Valley, 60 miles from Vegas, near Lake Mead. Looking at Quail Hollow's site, it appears that they have a CSA program from mid-March to mid-December!

Crazy thing about Vegas, isn't it? (Canned spinach? Gross! Frozen is bad enough!) But I do think that a large part of why there isn't more local -- or at least better -- produce has to do with the culture there. But I'm happy to see the little inroads that local eating is making, wherever they happen.

My husband and I were there in July, visiting my brother in law, and I just kept wondering why they had such yucky produce. I know they're in the desert, but I was thinking about how they are about as far from the central valley of California, as we are in Northern California. It's so funny that you write a whole article about it, when I spent a solid day griping about how the Indian place we went to used canned spinach, when I'm sure some farm, not too far away could have supplied it fresh. I'm so glad to hear that their food is starting to come from the surrounding area. We really are lucky in CA to have such abundant, amazing local produce and can talk to the growers themselves. Thanks for bringing up this topic!

I was amazed out west when sitting in my daughter's backyard I spied what I was sure a pomegranate hanging on a branch from a tree. It is pomegranate season, and how lovely that is!

There's hope for Vegas! My mother and father just moved to Vegas to retire, leaving me with all the seeds and cuttings from their rich and diverse Southern California garden they left behind. Maybe next Spring, I'll explore the local farm/s out there with them.
