You can get carbonated water at home pretty cheaply & easily:

We love ours, and it's made it possible to stop buying canned or bottled seltzer at the store (that whole carbon footprint thing).

I love my tap water. Portland, OR has water straight from snow melt off Mt Hood, and has possibly the lowest dissolved mineral content in the world, lower than even Pilsen, CZ. The city even has public water fountains everywhere (the famous Benson Bubblers), but tons of bottled water gets sold.

KCRW had something last week about the LA tap water coming from the same source as one of the major bottled water brands (the name escapes me for the moment).

Great topic for an article. Such good points you bring up. The last two places I've lived, we had a separate filter on our tap for drinkable water. It's so convenient, because it's right there. You don't have to lug gallons and gallons home, and no fuel or plastic to waste in the process. I think it's the best of all worlds. Thanks again for bringing it up.

Ill never understand this one. Down here in New Zealand we have some of the highest rated tap-water in the world (in fact we even bottle it and sell it off to high-end American outlets) but what i don't understand is: with all this great tap water, we still have one of the highest consumption rates (per capita) of bottled water... crazy!

I love cucumber water - it sounds strange but is much more refreshing than citrus.

Great essay, Cam. Really enjoyed it.

I suppose it makes sense that the Seltzer Sisters are delivering in plastic bottles now, but when Cranky and I were customers (20) years ago, they used antique glass bottles wrapped in groovy metal cages... Sigh.

Growing up, my mother always kept a pitcher of water in the fridge. She said it was a Southern thing.
