I'm English and I'm always very confused as to why people think we have terrible food. My only thought as to why is that we aren't snobbish about our food. Essentially, what you see is what you get. Opitimised by the roast dinner.

Thank you for showing that we do know how to cook and eat well.

thank you for helping to spread the good word about English food. One of my biggest regrets is not having gotten round to eating at St John before it became all famous and all!

cheers

My husband and I honeymooned in England, too, and we ate very well. The few times that we were disappointed, a couple of plain chocolate digestive biscuits took away the pain.

Mmmm...I've been wanting to eat this ever since I read the book. We were in London last month but had the kids with us and we couldn't get away for a meal at St. John's. I'll now have to give it a try at home.

I love marrow! I've never prepared it as a featured item on a dish before (just a by-product of my roast), and I think I'll have to get this cookbook.

I guess I understand where the prejudice against British food comes from. However, I've been there a few times in the last 15 years and have almost never been disappointed. We do have very good guides, though.

Leaving aside places like The Fat Duck and St. John's, I just wish we had Thai or Indian restaurants in San Francisco that were of the caliber of the base level London eateries! Or even decent fish and chips!

This is not so very different than Osso Bucco, yet the Italian dish gets raves, the English few. Shame. German food gets a bum rap, too. Sausages and beer - darned good and varied sausages and beer, but still...That photo's gorgeous; a bare-boned beauty.
