Maybe I'm deluding myself, but it doesn't taste like marshmallow. I think it's just a 'back of the box" way to get a meringue-like consistency to the filling base, which is further lightened by the whipped cream...

I was just thinking that I've never had grasshopper pie and wondering why. Then I read the recipe.....marshmallows. I've never been a fan and I'm guessing that comes from my mother. No marshmallows, no grasshopper pie.

Marshmallow creme is basically the same thing as melted marshmallows, I think. :)
And I'm betting Cool Whip for the dairy. ;)

Shoot, now I'm going to have to get my Mom's recipe.

I know it involves Marshmallow Creme. Not sure if the dairy comes from softened vanilla ice cream, cool whip, or a combination.

Personally, my favorite growing-up birthday treat was home made devil's food cake with boiled icing. Sticky-licious.
